Under Armour winter golf clothing: how to layer for rain, chill and cold

Golfer in the rain wearing a grey Under Armour Drive Pro Rain Jacket

Winter golf in Yorkshire rarely gives you one kind of weather. You can tee off in a cold, still morning, get caught in a shower on the back nine and finish in a biting wind. Under Armour’s answer is what it calls Total Condition Layering: three types of layer, one for rain, one for chill and one for cold, that you add or take off as the round changes.

Here’s what’s in the Under Armour winter range we have in store and online, what each piece does, and how to put an outfit together.

The three layers at a glance

Layer What it’s for Key pieces From
Rain Keeping water out Drive Pro Rain Jacket, Drive Rain Pant, Drive Rain Cap £32.99
Chill Warmth without bulk on cool, damp days Drive Midlayer, Drive 1/4 Zip Midlayer, Drive Midlayer Hoodie, Drive Funnel Neck £54.99
Cold Holding in body heat when it’s properly cold Drive Pro Insulated Jacket, ColdGear Infrared Tapered Trousers, ColdGear base layers, Storm ColdGear Infrared Beanie £26.99

Rain: stay dry for all 18 holes

Under Armour Total Condition Layering: rain layer, a waterproof Drive rain jacket

The rain layer is the one that does the heavy lifting in a British winter. Both the jacket and the trousers are 100% waterproof, made from a breathable, stretchy 2.5-layer bonded fabric with fully taped seams. UA Storm technology repels water without sacrificing breathability, so you don’t end up damp from the inside.

  • Drive Pro Rain Jacket (£129): 100% waterproof and windproof with an ultra-lightweight build. 4-way stretch means it moves with your swing, and the cuffs and hem adjust for a secure fit.
  • Drive Rain Pant (£100): 100% waterproof with 4-way stretch. Ankle zips with a snap tab let you pull them on and off over your shoes when a shower blows in.
  • Drive Rain Cap (£32.99): the same 2.5-layer, fully taped, 100% waterproof fabric as the jacket, in a cap.
  • Storm Golf Gloves, pair (£16.99): made for wet days, with UA Storm on the back of the hand and a synthetic leather palm that keeps its grip in the rain.

All of the Drive rain pieces use a fluorine-free water repellent treatment.

Chill: warmth without the bulk

Under Armour Total Condition Layering: chill layer, a white Drive midlayer

For most winter rounds, a good midlayer is the piece you’ll wear the most. Under Armour’s Drive midlayers use a soft, stretchy double-knit spacer fabric that traps warmth without adding weight, so you can still make a full turn. Most of them also have a UA Storm water-repellent finish to shrug off drizzle.

  • Drive Midlayer (£54.99): double-knit spacer construction with UA Storm and moisture-wicking, so you stay dry as the round warms up.
  • Drive 1/4 Zip Midlayer (£59.99): the same spacer fabric with a water-repellent finish, and a 1/4 zip to let heat out when you’re walking.
  • Drive Midlayer Hoodie (£59.99): lightweight warmth in a hoodie, with fabric that wicks sweat and dries fast.
  • Drive Funnel Neck (£54.99): soft jacquard fleece with UA Storm, and a wide funnel neck for extra cover against the wind.
  • Drive Pro Hybrid Hoodie (£79.99): water-resistant insulated panels where you need them most, with breathable fabric elsewhere to let excess heat escape.

Cold: hold on to your body heat

When the temperature really drops, Under Armour’s ColdGear Infrared lining comes in. It uses a soft, thermo-conductive inner coating to absorb and retain your body heat, so you stay warm without piling on layers.

  • Drive Pro Insulated Jacket (£99): 100g synthetic insulation on the front and upper back, a ColdGear Infrared lining and fleece-lined sleeves and sides. It has 4-way stretch in the swing zones and a UA Storm water-repellent finish for light rain and damp conditions. It isn’t fully waterproof, so add the rain jacket over it in a downpour.
  • ColdGear Infrared Tapered Trousers (£69.99): stretch-woven fabric with a brushed interior and ColdGear Infrared lining, plus UA Storm. The waistband has an internal grip to keep your shirt tucked in through your swing.
  • ColdGear Mock Base Layer (£44.99) and ColdGear Compression Leggings (£44.99): dual-layer fabric with an ultra-warm brushed interior and a smooth, fast-drying outside. Wear them under everything else.
  • Storm ColdGear Infrared Beanie (£26.99): a brushed fleece interior with ColdGear Infrared, and UA Storm on the outside.
  • UA Winter Mitts (£19.99): 80g synthetic insulation and UA Storm, to keep your hands warm between shots.

Feet: waterproof shoes and boots

Cold, wet feet will ruin a winter round faster than anything. Two options from Under Armour:

  • Drive Winterized Golf Boots (£99): a waterproof membrane and winterized construction for warmth, with a Rotational Resistance outsole for grip on wet ground. Backed by a 1-year waterproof warranty.
  • Drive Pro Clone Golf Shoes (£159.99): a full waterproof membrane with a 1-year warranty. Under Armour says the Clone won Editor’s Choice from both Today’s Golfer and Golf Monthly this year, with Today’s Golfer saying “the traction is among the best in golf”.

How to put it together

  • Cool, dry morning: ColdGear base layer, a Drive midlayer and ColdGear Infrared trousers.
  • Showers forecast: a Drive midlayer with the Drive Pro Rain Jacket and Rain Pant in your bag, ready to pull on.
  • Properly cold: ColdGear base layer, the Drive Pro Insulated Jacket, ColdGear Infrared trousers, the beanie and the winter mitts.
  • Cold and wet: all of the above, with the rain jacket over the insulated jacket and the Winterized boots on your feet.

Keeping your clubs dry matters too. Our guide to Big Max waterproof bags explains the difference between fully waterproof and water-resistant bags.
