The Shot Scope LM1 is a pocket-sized radar launch monitor that gives you your club speed, ball speed, smash factor, carry and total distance for £199, with no subscription. It works on the range, into a net at home and on the course, which makes it one of the easiest ways to keep practising with real numbers through the winter.
Here’s what it measures, how accurate it is, what it doesn’t do, and who it suits.

What the LM1 measures
Place the LM1 about five feet behind the ball, pick your club and hit. After each shot the screen shows:
- Club speed: how fast the clubhead is moving at impact.
- Ball speed: how fast the ball leaves the face.
- Smash factor: ball speed divided by club speed, a quick guide to how well you’ve struck it.
- Carry distance: how far the ball flies in the air.
- Total distance: carry plus roll.
There’s also a speed training mode for tracking swing speed with a club or with speed sticks, and you can switch between mph and yards or km/h and metres.
What it doesn’t do
At this price, the LM1 doesn’t measure spin, launch angle, club path or face angle. It tells you how far and how fast, not why the ball curved. If you want to see what’s causing a slice or why your driver balloons, that needs a more advanced launch monitor, like the TrackMan in our custom fitting centre.
How accurate is it?
Golf Magic tested the LM1 against a Foresight GC Quad, a tour-level launch monitor. They found:
- Carry distances were close, especially outdoors.
- Ball speed read slightly high, more so indoors.
- Club speed was the weakest number, reading several mph higher than the GC Quad.
Their verdict was that its distances are “more than accurate enough” for everyday golfers. In practice, the LM1 is best for learning your carry distances and checking your gapping. Use the club speed reading as a guide rather than an exact figure.
Indoors, the ball only travels a few feet into a net, so carry and total distance are worked out from the speed readings rather than tracked through the air. For the most reliable distances, use it outdoors on the range.
No subscription, and it works with the app
Every session syncs to the free Shot Scope app over Bluetooth, so you keep a lifetime history of your shots and your averages for each club. There are no monthly fees, which is the big difference from many launch monitors that lock their best features behind a subscription. The free Shot Scope golf GPS app is included too.
Where to use it
- At home over winter: hit into a net in the garage or garden and keep working on strike and speed.
- On the range: learn exactly how far each club carries. Our driving range is floodlit, so you can practise after work all winter.
- On the course: check your numbers during a practice round.
It comes with a protective case and a USB charging cable, so it’s easy to keep in your golf bag.
Who is the LM1 for?
- Good fit: golfers who want to know their distances, check their gapping and track swing speed, without paying for a subscription.
- Good fit: anyone practising at home into a net over the winter.
- Good fit: a Christmas present for a golfer who likes data.
- Not the one for you: if you want spin, launch angle and club path to work on your swing, or a full home simulator.
