New Srixon ZXi irons: ZXi7, ZXi5, ZXi5+ and ZXiU explained

Srixon has refreshed its forged ZXi iron family. There are updated versions of the ZXi7, ZXi5 and ZXiU utility iron, plus a brand-new model, the ZXi5+. Every face and body is forged in Japan by Endo, the specialist forging company Srixon has worked with for years.

The whole range is available now at Express Golf. Iron sets start from £1,049 for a 5-PW and the ZXiU utility iron is £219.

The new ZXi range at a glance

Iron Type Best for 7-iron loft Price
ZXi7 Players Low handicaps who want control and shot-shaping 32° £1,049 (5-PW)
ZXi5 Players’ performance Low to mid handicaps who want distance with some forgiveness 31° £1,049 (5-PW)
ZXi5+ (new) Players’ distance Mid handicaps who want more distance and height 29.5° £1,049 (5-PW)
ZXiU Utility iron Replacing a 2, 3 or 4-iron n/a (18°, 20°, 23°) £219 each

The game-improvement ZXiR carries on unchanged for golfers who want as much forgiveness as possible.

What’s new across the range

  • Forged by Endo in Japan. Every face and body in the range.
  • i-FORGED. Srixon condenses the grain of the steel along the high toe and topline when forging, then softens the face for a soft, solid feel.
  • Tungsten toe weight in the long and mid irons, to keep ball speed and spin more consistent on off-centre hits.
  • Tour V.T. sole. Varied sole width and bounce help the club glide through the turf instead of digging.
  • Progressive grooves. Wider grooves in the longer irons and deeper, closer-set grooves in the scoring clubs for more spin control.
  • Cleaner looks. Shaped with input from Srixon’s tour players, with slightly thinner toplines than the previous ZXi irons.

ZXi7: the players’ iron

The ZXi7 is the one for good ball-strikers who want to control their flight and shape shots. It’s a one-piece forging in soft S15C steel. Behind the sweet spot sits PureFrame iQ, a wider, thicker ridge of steel that firms up the strike while using less mass than before, so the iron is a touch more stable than the last version.

  • Lofts: 7-iron 32°, pitching wedge 46°.
  • Stock shaft: True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115, stiff.

ZXi5: performance with forgiveness

The ZXi5 has the widest appeal in the range. It’s now billed as a “players’ performance” iron: compact enough for better players, with enough forgiveness for mid handicappers. It uses MainFrame iQ, a pattern of grooves, channels and notches milled into the back of the face, designed to give more ball speed across the face.

  • Lofts: 7-iron 31°, pitching wedge 44°.
  • Stock shafts: Dynamic Gold Mid steel (stiff or regular) or Mitsubishi MMT graphite.

ZXi5+: new for this season

The ZXi5+ is the new addition. It takes the ZXi5 and adds a longer blade, a wider sole and stronger lofts. The result is more distance and a little more forgiveness, while still looking like a players’ iron at address rather than a chunky game-improvement club.

  • Lofts: 7-iron 29.5°, pitching wedge 43°.
  • Stock shafts: Dynamic Gold Mid 100 (stiff) or Mid 90 (regular) steel, or Mitsubishi MMT 60 graphite in regular or senior (A) flex.
  • Options: an optional sand wedge, and a 3-iron as a custom order.

If you’ve lost some distance, or want your irons to launch higher and land softer, this is the one to try. If you already hit it far enough and want more spin and control, the ZXi5 is the better fit.

ZXiU: the utility iron

The ZXiU replaces a hard-to-hit long iron. It uses the same i-FORGED and MainFrame iQ technology as the ZXi5 and ZXi5+, in a compact, blade-like head with little offset. It’s a good alternative to a hybrid if you prefer the look of an iron.

  • Lofts: 18° (2), 20° (3) and 23° (4).
  • Shafts: Mitsubishi MMT graphite as standard, with steel available to order.

Lofts compared

Iron 4 5 6 7 8 9 PW AW
ZXi7 22° 25° 28° 32° 36° 41° 46° 51°
ZXi5 22° 24° 27° 31° 35° 39° 44° 50°
ZXi5+ 21° 23° 26° 29.5° 33.5° 38° 43° 49°

Stronger lofts mean more distance, but also a lower flight and less spin, which is why the ZXi5+ pairs them with a lower centre of gravity to keep the ball up.

Mix and match

Because the irons share the same family look, they blend well in a combo set. Srixon’s own combo puts ZXi5 long irons (4-6) with ZXi7 short irons (7-PW), and many golfers swap their longest iron for a ZXiU. Ask us about combo and custom builds, including left-handed clubs, other set make-ups and different shafts.
